DIRECTOR OF MERKAZ EDNA
Batya Neumann - M.A. Learning Disabilities
I spent twelve years in New York building a teachers' training program in Special Education while teaching courses in learning disabilities at several universities on both a graduate and an undergraduate level. After making aliya, I ran a resource room in Jerusalem and continued training teachers. I studied different types of therapies such as Snoezilen and Bibliotherapy which I continue to use in my work with private clients who have Alzheimer's. I have also volunteered for many years on telephone crisis lines in Israel.
All of these different aspects of my background have come together at Merkaz Edna.
I believe that the mind and the body have the ability to heal themselves, but sometimes (most times) we just need some help to get things moving. This help can come in all different forms of therapy and/or bodywork. I also strongly believe in our own power and the amazing help and support we can give each other.
This is my goal for Merkaz Edna - to have a safe place where people can come to lessen their stress and to feel good about themselves, whether that means getting a massage, talking with a therapist, coming to different workshops to broaden one's horizons, or just to come and sit on the couch and have a hot drink to relax.

Yael Ami-El - Swedish Massage Therapist
Simply put, massage is relaxation for the body and soul. Using natural oils, a massage treatment creates an overall feeling of well being. It reduces stress, and can even relieve muscle pain. An interesting fact, the word massage may trace its etymological roots back to the Hebrew me-shach "to anoint with oil."
I do a form of massage called Swedish massage, the main purpose of which is to increase the oxygen flow in the blood and release toxins from the muscles. This type of massage uses a firm but gentle pressure to improve circulation, ease muscle aches and tension, improve flexibility, and create a sense of relaxation. It is invigorating as well as relaxing, and is a wonderful and holistic way to do something nice for yourself.
Aaron Askanase - Acupuncturist, CranioSacral Therapist, Healer
Aaron is a healer who combines acupuncture and craniosacral therapy to induce very deep relaxation and healing. His approach is very minimalist: he uses four to six needles per treatment placed with great care in the locations that will maximize healing. Aaron views his role as removing the blockages that prevent healing, thereby creating an environment in which the body is able to heal itself.
Aaron has a Masters Degree in Acupuncture from the New England School of Acupuncture, and a DIplomate from the National Certification Committee of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. He is Board Certified in the USA and licensed by the State of Massachusetts.
His treatments are effective for a whole range of issues. He specializes in the relief of migraines, insomnia, digestive issues, pain relief, sciatica, and women's issues (menstrual problems, infertility, and pregnancy related issues, including labor induction.) His treatments are especially effective for stress relief and all conditions that are caused or worsened by stress.
Sandra Ben David - Therapist
Ruth Bensabath Horenstein - Thai Massage, Thai Medical Massage
Working with the body is a way of life for me. I began as a dancer; moving, creating, and teaching. During the past 20 years I have taught dance to children, adolescents & women. As a young dancer I began the practice of yoga for its physical benefits of strength and flexibility and soon learned how deeply and positively yoga affected my mental well-being.
In Thai Massage, these disciplines come together. Sometimes described as 'passive yoga', the massage is performed on a mat,
with the recipient dressed in loose clothing. Thai massage is calming, invigorating and energizing, depending on the needs of the client. My goal is to provide a setting in
which the recipient can reconnect to herself, as body and mind relax, and the channels of energy are gently unblocked.
In Traditional Thai Massage I work on the entire body,
whereas in Thai Medical Massage I work therapy points specific to a particular ailment, such as chronic low back pain, or stiff neck. As a healing art, Thai Massage serves
to awaken the body/mind's own healing energy. I see my role as facilitating and nurturing that process.
Naomi Caplan - Social Worker
I qualified as a Social Worker in London, England where I worked as a local government Social Worker in a Children’s Team. Since making Aliya in 2004 I have mainly worked as a play therapist, primarily with children with autism, and I incorporate a number of different methods in my work. My approach is positive, child-centered, flexible, non-judgmental and eclectic due to my continuous study of different therapies. I have particular interest in Task- Centered Therapy, Brief Therapies and I utilize many techniques from the Son-Rise method.
I enjoy working with children and young adults, and have worked particularly with those experiencing behavioral and anxiety issues, those who have experienced loss, and the learning disabled.
Shira Chernoble - Grief Counselor, Nurse, Massage Therapist and Healer
I have been involved in Pastoral Counseling for over thirty years and have been a massage therapist for close to twenty years. In my pastoral counseling,
I have specialized in grief therapy, both sudden and long-term. In my bodywork, I specialize in shiatsu, aromatherapy, reflexology, and chinese massage. Shiatsu works with
the chinese meridians of acupuncture, and is noninvasive.
So my work incorporates all of these different disciplines. Over the years I have conducted various training
workshops, teaching lay and professional people how to work with loss. I have worked with various foundations
who support families with loss, specifically as a result of terrorism, such as the Koby Mandel Foundation.
Revital Cohen - Clinical Social Worker, Specializing in Family
In the last seven years I have worked as a therapist according to the Psycho-dynamic Approach. I have worked with individuals suffering from different psychological problems as well as alcoholics and drug addicts.
The Psycho-dynamic approach considers the moment of therapy as one in which the client opens himself up through words and conduct. The support and acceptance by the therapist acts as a mirroring which permits the client to learn more about himself. In this way he is then capable of making necessary and desired changes in different fields: work, partnership, fears, etc. The relationship which is created between the therapist and client opens the space for change and growth.
From my experience I see that therapy has the potential to help someone who feels frustration, fear, dissatisfaction, and lack of joy of living. Childhood traumas (among other experiences) can bring about these blockages, and the therapy process includes reconnecting with these traumas in a "safe place" which makes them less disturbing and this can enable the client to have a richer and healthier life.
Joy Epstein - MSW, Family Therapist
In my work with children and young adults, I help the client deal with issues related to adjustment and identity formation, self esteem, sexuality, abuse and trauma, anxiety and depression. Adult issues include work on strengthening relationships, intimacy, parenting difficulties and conflict resolution, and coping with stress and anxiety.
As a psychotherapist with specialized training in family therapy, I have twenty years of experience in the public and private sector counseling individuals, couples and families. I currently serve as the Clinical Supervisor for the team of social workers at Nefesh B'Nefesh and I maintain a private practice in Jerusalem and Gush Etzion.
I received my MSW from Wurzweiler School of Social Work and did my advanced training in Family Therapy at the Pacific Coast Family Therapy Institute in Vancouver, BC.
I work in both English and Hebrew.
Daniella Freifeld - MSW, Certified Sex Therapist
Sara Halevi - MA, MFCC, Cognitive Behavioral Therapist
I have a BA in Sociology from Brandeis University, where I had the honor of sitting at the feet of Morrie Schwartz of "Tuesdays with Morrie". I then completed my MA in clinical psychology at California School of Professional Psychology. I worked with life-threatened and chronically ill adults at the Center for Attitudinal Healing, where I developed a great love for Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. While raising my babies I taught in a high school program. I later returned to clinical work, applying my therapeutic orientation to my affinity for teenagers. In 1999 I made aliya with my husband and children. In Israel I have continued my work with teens, as well as adults with chronic pain and illness, anxiety disorders and parenting issues.
Nina Hilely - Massage Therapist, Reflexologist
Hi! My name is Nina Hilely and I work in several fields: reflexology, aromatherapeutic massage, and Hopi candles
Reflexology is a holistic therapeutic method that uses massage and pressure on the soles of the feet and hands. Reflexology is customarily used in two ways: for therapy and in dealing with existing symptoms. It is highly effective in states of chronic illness such as breathing problems, allergies, headaches, orthopedic problems, digestive problems, pain, and sleep disturbances, to name only a few.
Aromotherapeutic massage combines conventional massage with aromotherapeutic
oils that are known for their ability to induce relaxation, healing, and easing
of pain. Each aromotherapeutic essence has its own properties. Different essences are combined in order
to help relieve the client's symptoms.
Aromotherapeutic massage is effective in achieving relaxation, easing
muscular and skeletal pain, and treating many other conditions.
It is a very pampering experience that is also appropriate as a gift.
Hopi candles is a therapeutic method that has been found effective in treating chronic ear problems in children and adults alike. It helps to eliminate wax, bacteria, fungi, and infections, and offers significant relief in cases of sinus and congestion problems.
Beth Kanter - Licensed Clinical Social Worker
I use a cognitive/behavioral model in helping people feel better about themselves and their lives. Moving at the client's pace while encouraging movement at the same time in a caring, positive, problem solving approach has been helpful in my work. I have worked with all populations and with all kinds of issues, including grief work, childhood trauma, depression, anxiety and issues related to ageing and caregiving.
I have approximately 18 years of experience in various settings, more recently in a mental health clinic in Brooklyn, N.Y. I am a native of Chicago and came to Israel in the fall of 2007.
Sharon Katz - Reflexologist
Reflexology is a therapy based on the principle that there are reflex areas on the feet, corresponding to all organs, glands and parts of the body. Working on these reflexes using thumb, finger and hand pressure, helps the body seek its own natural balance, relieving stress and tension, improving blood circulation and general well-being.
The different sensations experienced during a treatment are interpreted by the reflexologist as an indication as to which parts of the body are congested and which are not. Especially when one is stressed or after illness, the body is in a state of "imbalance" which weakens the body's immune system and resistance to disease. The reflexologist can detect tiny "crystalline deposits" in the feet, and by working on these points, can release blockages and restore the free flow of energy throughout the body.
If you want to feel better, function better, and improve your biological and physiological well-being, Reflexology treatment could really help you.
Shlomzion Landau - Therapist for Functional & Learning Difficulties using the Elbaum approach.
The Elbaum approach is a physical training method designed to improve learning and functional abilities.
This therapy can help those suffering from hyperactivity, aggression, impulsiveness, apathy, withdrawal and isolation, lack of concentration, low self esteem, etc.
The basis of the Elbaum approach lies in the principle that learning is rooted in the body. Therefore when a specific body system is dysfunctional, it prevents the efficient and effective learning process or other functional abilities. Thus the diagnosis and subsequent training is based on a holistic approach to the functional causes – motor sensory, emotional behavioural, cognitive and energetic.
In the course of therapy – which is comprised of movement, massage and discussion – I guide my client through different physical exercises, designed according to the diagnostic findings of the evaluation. The object of the exercises is to create a balance between the body systems and enable the release of tension, which in turn strengthens and allows individual control of the body.
Treatment and training using the Elbaum method -- Improves learning abilities: reading, writing, mathematics.
- Strengthens muscles and improves skeletal posture.
- Increases the ability to separate limb movements and control body organs.
- Helps to regulate the senses.
- Enhances spatial perception and awareness.
- Boosts self confidence.
- Improves social integration for the individual at home, at school, at work and amongst friends.
Treatment is suitable for everyone: adults, adolescents, and children.
Michael Levin - Shiatsu, Reflexology, Bio-energy Healer
Shiatsu is a Japanese treatment based on the principles of ancient chinese medicine. It is performed on the entire body, and essentially is a delicate manipulation of the energy channels naturally flowing in every part of the body. Shiatsu can help solve a wide variety of both physical and deeper problems, leaving the patient with a feeling of calm and relaxation.
Reflexology uses the soles of the feet as if they were a map of the entire body. The treatment is based on a balancing of different fundamentals within the body itself; aimed at strengthening the body while relaxing the client. It arouses a sense of positivity which helps general healing processes.
Healing, or bio-energy, is based on the energy field of the body, and allows both the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of different health problems. The application of this treatment is exceptionally comfortable and especially good for relieving pain of different forms.
Nomi Pulver - Voice Healer
The "Voice of Light" therapy, developed by Ester Shamir, uses the vocal energy of the patient and therapist in such a way as to relieve pain, anxiety and fatigue. The therapist locates the specific problem area and produces a frequency that will cause a response by the body. These vocal frequencies pass through a special wood cone called a "Kondola".
With the focus of the patient the treatment helps the healing process, and allows a deep connection to ones own healing power. The treatment is painless; sounds enter the body and echo in the places that need support.
I am a graduate of the "Kol haRuach" Therapist Training course as well as an actress, singer and story teller at the "Train Theater" in Jerusalem.
Tamar Quinn - BSN, MA, RCP - Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
TCM is a complete medical system with a tradition going back thousands of years. It deals with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease as well as the maintenance of health.
TCM views health as a state of dynamic balance. Each human being is seen as a world in miniature, a microcosm of nature. When the elements of nature are in balance, organs function fully, the mind is clear, and challenges of daily life are met with flexibility, strength, and resilience. When that balance is upset, illness can result. The strategy of Chinese medicine is to restore harmony through the use of acupuncture, herbal medicine, diet, exercise, and massage. TCM can be used successfully as a primary treatment and also as a complementary therapy to conventional western medicine in the treatment of many acute and chronic illnesses.
Dr. Justin Resnick - PhD, Clinical Psychologist
I use a "Strength & Resiliency" model to counsel adults, teens and children. I have a PhD in clinical psychology from the USA and advanced training in marriage & family therapy, and over 12 years' experience as a psychotherapist.
"Strength & Resiliency" is a therapy approach which is uplifting and positive. We listen closely to your problems and struggles, while paying unique attention to your successes, your strengths and to what inspires you. My work incorporates methods from cognitive therapy, narrative and play therapy. I find the strengths approach particularly helpful for married couples with intense conflict, defiant teenagers, children with ADHD, abuse survivors, and anyone who has previously found therapy alienating. I work extensively and uniquely with adult men and fathers.
Robin Rosenbaum - Clinical Social Worker
I am from San Francisco and have been living in Jerusalem since 1993. I hold an MSW in clinical social work from San Francisco State University. I graduated in 1985 and since then I have worked as a psychotherapist in private practice and in public settings. I offer in-depth psychotherapy specializing in a variety of issues such as loss, trauma, personal transformation, and sexual orientation. I work eclectically, using a range of methods; my style is warm, personal and flexible.
I believe that the client-therapist relationship should be an open dialogue. Years of experience have shown me that therapy can heal and improve one's quality of life and relationships by bringing the past into present tense, and working through unresolved issues. It provides a reflective supportive space that allows change to happen. When people are uncomfortable and want to grow, many possibilities open up. I see myself as a facilitator in this process, a "birthing coach" (which I also happen to be).
Dr. Ora Rotenstein - PhD, Clinical Psychologist (U.S.)
I received my PhD from St John's University in New York, USA. My training and experience have led me to the belief that therapy should be tailored to the individual and his/her unique needs. My approach is eclectic, as I have been trained in cognitive-behavioral, psycho dynamic and family systems therapies. I've made use of each method individually or in combination when working with adults, adolescents, children, couples and families.
While I've found a number of treatments highly effective, I have focused my clinical practice and research in cognitive-behavioral and systems therapies. I've witnessed great success with these approaches in the treatment of anxiety, depression, family issues and conflict. Above all, I believe in the client's power to bring about positive changes in his/her life and that the client-therapist relationship serves to facilitate such change.
I am equally comfortable working in English and Hebrew.
Dr. Silvia Schneider - PhD, Clinical and Educational Psychologist
I am a licensed clinical and educational psychologist with 20 years experience working with children, adolescents, and adults, both in private practice and in the public sector. My areas of expertise include individual and couples psychotherapy, parent counseling, and psychological assessments. I work fluently in English, Hebrew, and Spanish.
I am often asked the question, "What kind of problems do you specialize in?" and my answer is that I specialize in helping a person to move forward in his life. The major obstacles people face include feeling unhappy with a particular aspect of their life, being "stuck" in life, feeling too weary/depressed/inadequate, or getting knocked down by life and not knowing how to get back up. I try to help a person overcome these difficulties and move on with life.
Yehuda Shull - Personal Growth and Healing Counselor
Over the past 18 years I have learned a variety of techniques which bring about greater calm, confidence, and healing. I have had extensive training and experience in the fields of counseling, experiential self-help workshops and intensive personal growth and development programs. For over 5 years I worked in counseling, education and management. Over this period I was also trained as a Building Self-Esteem practitioner.
Many of us will acknowledge that challenges in our lives have often been a source of valuable growth, insight and personal awakening. Throughout my life I have found this to be so. What I bring to my clients is the result of many years of experience that I have personally grown through.
My work involves facilitating healing from past wounds: physical, verbal, emotional and sexual. I am aware of the fact that addressing these issues can at times be very painful and challenging. I am a firm believer that we always have the capacity within us for greater self-awareness, acceptance and healing.
In addition, I am able to assist clients with the following areas:
- Discovering what you are passionate about and want to devote your life to, awakening and gaining clarity on your unique personal purpose and mission
- Identifying the relationship between your emotions and physical well-being, eating disorders, dieting and weight-loss
- Strengthening self-discipline, will power and motivation, achieving more of what you want in your life
- Dating and Marriage preparation and enrichment counseling for singles and couples
- Accessing an experience of real and personal connection to the Divine within you
I have a passionate desire to reach out and touch the lives of others. My hope is for all of us to be more present in our lives, bringing all of ourselves into whatever we do and enjoying the fullness of all that we experience.
