DIRECTOR OF MERKAZ EDNA
Batya Neumann - M.A. Learning Disabilities
I spent twelve years in New York building a teachers' training program in Special Education while teaching courses in learning disabilities at several universities on both a graduate and an undergraduate level. After making aliya, I ran a resource room in Jerusalem and continued training teachers. I studied different types of therapies such as Snoezilen and Bibliotherapy which I continue to use in my work with private clients who have Alzheimer's. I have also volunteered for many years on telephone crisis lines in Israel.
All of these different aspects of my background have come together at Merkaz Edna.
I believe that the mind and the body have the ability to heal themselves, but sometimes (most times) we just need some help to get things moving. This help can come in all different forms of therapy and/or bodywork. I also strongly believe in our own power and the amazing help and support we can give each other.
This is my goal for Merkaz Edna - to have a safe place where men and women can come to lessen their stress and to feel good about themselves, whether that means getting a massage, talking with a therapist, coming to different workshops to broaden one's horizons, or just to come and sit on the couch and have a hot drink to relax.

Debbie Amichai - Therapist
Aaron Askanase - Acupuncturist, CranioSacral Therapist, Healer
Aaron is a healer who combines acupuncture and craniosacral therapy to induce very deep relaxation and healing. His approach is very minimalist: he uses four to six needles per treatment placed with great care in the locations that will maximize healing. Aaron views his role as removing the blockages that prevent healing, thereby creating an environment in which the body is able to heal itself.
Aaron has a Masters Degree in Acupuncture from the New England School of Acupuncture, and a DIplomate from the National Certification Committee of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. He is Board Certified in the USA and licensed by the State of Massachusetts.
His treatments are effective for a whole range of issues. He specializes in the relief of migraines, insomnia, digestive issues, pain relief, sciatica, and women's issues (menstrual problems, infertility, and pregnancy related issues, including labor induction.) His treatments are especially effective for stress relief and all conditions that are caused or worsened by stress.
Sara Avitzour - Cognitive-Behavioral Therapist
My principal goal as a CBT therapist is to help my clients achieve emotional change by teaching them to identify unhelpful and destructive ways in which they may be thinking and acting, and to develop in their stead more helpful and adaptive patterns of thought and behavior. The tools and skills they gain in this process empower my clients by enabling them to become, in effect, their own therapists.
CBT is a powerful approach which very often achieves impressive results in a relatively short time; a typical treatment lasts 12-20 weeks. It has been proven effective for a wide range of emotional disorders and difficulties, including depression; anxiety (including disorders such as panic, social phobia, and OCD – obsessive-compulsive disorder); and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). I have successfully treated people suffering from all these problems as well as others.
I received my Master degree from Yeshiva University’s Wurzweiler School of Social Work. I completed the course in cognitive-behavioral therapy given by Hadassah Hospital’s psychiatric clinic, where I work part-time as a CBT therapist.
I am completely fluent in both English and Hebrew.
Sandra Ben David - Therapist
I work in a psychodynamic fashion – using "talk therapy" but occasionally bringing in writing, drawing, psychodrama, visualization, journaling, spirituality, even 'homework' where it seems beneficial. I see myself as being part coach, part soul-mate, part optometrist – offering new lenses with which to look at one's life to gain deeper understanding of thought and behavior patterns, and with that insight, to generate the possibility for change and growth.
My main objective is to create a 'safe space' for looking more deeply and thoughtfully into one's current life - and into one's past – in order to understand what is being experienced. We examine the client’s passions, their frustrations and successes, as well as patterns of connection within various relationships. Using different therapeutic techniques, we journey together on a path toward a more profound and complex understanding of the self which enables greater self-acceptance, respect, and ultimately, growth.
I received my B.A. from Stanford University in California in Human Biology and a Masters in Clinical Sociology with a certification in Individual and Couples' Therapy from the joint program of Neve Yerushalayim and the University of North Texas.
I work in both Hebrew and English.
Ruth Bensabath Horenstein - Thai Massage, Thai Medical Massage
Working with the body is a way of life for me. I began as a dancer; moving, creating, and teaching. During the past 20 years I have taught dance to children, adolescents & women. As a young dancer I began the practice of yoga for its physical benefits of strength and flexibility and soon learned how deeply and positively yoga affected my mental well-being.
In Thai Massage, these disciplines come together. Sometimes described as 'passive yoga', the massage is performed on a mat,
with the recipient dressed in loose clothing. Thai massage is calming, invigorating and energizing, depending on the needs of the client. My goal is to provide a setting in
which the recipient can reconnect to herself, as body and mind relax, and the channels of energy are gently unblocked.
In Traditional Thai Massage I work on the entire body,
whereas in Thai Medical Massage I work therapy points specific to a particular ailment, such as chronic low back pain, or stiff neck. As a healing art, Thai Massage serves
to awaken the body/mind's own healing energy. I see my role as facilitating and nurturing that process.
Rahel Bitton - Dance Teacher/Therapist
What is dance-movement therapy?
Dance is the most fundamental of the arts, involving direct expression through the body. It can effect changes in feelings, cognition, physical functioning, and behavior.
In addition to those with severe emotional disorders, many people can benefit from dance-movement therapy such as those with eating disorders, adult survivors of violence, sexually and physically abused children, substance abusers, people with ADHD, and those with chronic illness.
Rahel speaks English, Hebrew and French.
Shira Chernoble - Grief Counselor, Nurse, Massage Therapist and Healer
I have been involved in Pastoral Counseling for over thirty years and have been a massage therapist for close to twenty years. In my pastoral counseling,
I have specialized in grief therapy, both sudden and long-term. In my bodywork, I specialize in shiatsu, aromatherapy, reflexology, and chinese massage. Shiatsu works with
the chinese meridians of acupuncture, and is noninvasive.
So my work incorporates all of these different disciplines. Over the years I have conducted various training
workshops, teaching lay and professional people how to work with loss. I have worked with various foundations
who support families with loss, specifically as a result of terrorism, such as the Koby Mandel Foundation.
Joy Epstein - MSW, Family Therapist
I am a psychotherapist with specialized training in family therapy. I have twenty years of experience in the public and private sector counseling individuals, couples and families. I currently serve as the Clinical Supervisor for the team of social workers at Nefesh B'Nefesh and I maintain a private practice in Jerusalem and Gush Etzion.
I work with adolescents, young adults, couples and families, helping them to address issues related to adjustment, anxiety, depression, low self esteem, sexuality, abuse and trauma. With couples, my work focuses on strengthening relationships, intimacy, parenting and loss.
In the therapy room I create a warm, compassionate, and accepting relationship with my clients and together we begin an exploration of who they are: their challenges, losses, and the emotional blueprints that have affected their relationships, past and present, and how they experience themselves. Through this dynamic process I help the client to see things from outside of their view point and to uncover and discover new insights and deeper understandings of themselves and their relationships with others. The essence of the work ultimately provides new opportunities for self acceptance, personal growth and change.
I received my MSW from Wurzweiler School of Social Work and did my advanced training in Family Therapy at the Pacific Coast Family Therapy Institute in Vancouver, BC.
I work in both English and Hebrew.
Daniella Freifeld - MSW, Individual & Couples Sex Therapist
I presently am working in the Department of Sex Therapy at the Meir Hospital Kfar Saba and in private practice in Jerusalem.
Jeff Friedman - Therapist
After completing an MSW in Clinical Social Work, I made aliyah in 1983 and have been working in a variety of settings and age groups here in Israel.
My training includes couples and family therapy as well as mediation. I draw on methods of Imago therapy and psychodramatic techniques to help facilitate more effective communication and relationship building skills. I am an accredited mediator and member of the Israel Association of Family and Marital therapists, and have an expertise in 'children of divorce,' having run groups for many years in the field.
As a Mental Health officer in the I.D.F, I have training and experience working with adolescence and young adults under stress and transition.
My work with children over the past 15 years focuses on using the expressive arts as a tool of self image enhancement and competency. I use the plastic arts, music, and carpentry as tools of accessing experiences which can help the child or adult deepen their connection to themselves and the issues they are struggling with. I work with the emotional sides of children living with ADD and ADHD as well as crisis intervention during times of stress.
I am a member of the Israel Association of Painters and Sculptors-Jerusalem Artist's House.
I work with adults too.
I work in Hebrew and English.
Rachel Frielich - MA, Transpersonal Counseling Psychology and Art Therapy
I am licensed as an art therapist through the Ministry of Health in Israel and have an MA degree in Transpersonal Counseling Psychology from Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado. I have worked in the mental health field for 19 years. My experience includes working at Hadassah Hospital with children who have experienced trauma, in a home for abused children, in hospice care with the terminally ill and their families, with survivors of sexual abuse in a university counseling center, and with adolescent art therapy groups. In addition to private practice, I work in a new center for children and adults with special needs who have experienced abuse.
I use a variety of techniques such as art therapy, healing imagery work, mindfulness meditation practices, play therapy and EMDR. I believe that my role as a therapist is to be a witness and guide on the client's journey. When engaged in art therapy, be assured that no artistic experience or proficiency is required, only a willingness to give form to feelings and trust the process.
Nina Hilely - Massage Therapist, Reflexologist
Hi! My name is Nina Hilely and I work in several fields: reflexology, aromatherapeutic massage, and Hopi candles
Reflexology is a holistic therapeutic method that uses massage and pressure on the soles of the feet and hands. Reflexology is customarily used in two ways: for therapy and in dealing with existing symptoms. It is highly effective in states of chronic illness such as breathing problems, allergies, headaches, orthopedic problems, digestive problems, pain, and sleep disturbances, to name only a few.
Aromotherapeutic massage combines conventional massage with aromotherapeutic
oils that are known for their ability to induce relaxation, healing, and easing
of pain. Each aromotherapeutic essence has its own properties. Different essences are combined in order
to help relieve the client's symptoms.
Aromotherapeutic massage is effective in achieving relaxation, easing
muscular and skeletal pain, and treating many other conditions.
It is a very pampering experience that is also appropriate as a gift.
Hopi candles is a therapeutic method that has been found effective in treating chronic ear problems in children and adults alike. It helps to eliminate wax, bacteria, fungi, and infections, and offers significant relief in cases of sinus and congestion problems.
Sharon Katz - Reflexologist
Reflexology is a therapy based on the principle that there are reflex areas on the feet, corresponding to all organs, glands and parts of the body. Working on these reflexes using thumb, finger and hand pressure, helps the body seek its own natural balance, relieving stress and tension, improving blood circulation and general well-being.
The different sensations experienced during a treatment are interpreted by the reflexologist as an indication as to which parts of the body are congested and which are not. Especially when one is stressed or after illness, the body is in a state of "imbalance" which weakens the body's immune system and resistance to disease. The reflexologist can detect tiny "crystalline deposits" in the feet, and by working on these points, can release blockages and restore the free flow of energy throughout the body.
If you want to feel better, function better, and improve your biological and physiological well-being, Reflexology treatment could really help you.

Shayna Kulman- Lipsey - M.S.W., R.S.W. – Psychotherapist and Clinical Social Worker
I am originally from Canada but have worked in Australia for several years before making aliyah in 2008.
With over thirty years in the field of mental health, I bring the wisdom of my life and work experiences to my work as well as a sound theoretical base. I have been very successful in helping people move forward in their lives.
Because of my many years of experience, I have worked with people with many different presenting concerns: depression, stress and anxiety, low self-esteem, loss and bereavement, couple and marital issues, emotional and physical infidelity, divorce, family of origin issues, parenting concerns, dating and relationship issues, and adjusting to changes through the life cycle from adolescence to aging.
I am a trainer in suicide alertness and intervention, and I educate professionals and community groups about how to keep their communities suicide-safe. I also lead groups in Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy for Depression and Women at Midlife.
I graduated from the University of Toronto and hold a Masters Degree in Social Work and subsequently became a clinical member of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapists. I have previously taught at the university and college level and supervised M.S.W. students.
My practice is presently conducted in English.
Ofra Oppenheimer - Alternative Medicine Practitioner & Counselor, Massage Therapist - Swedish, Medical, Sport, Deep Skin and Lymphatic
Bodywork treatment improves the function of the body directly and indirectly, thus creating the ideal circumstances for self-healing and better health. Relaxing the body releases latent feelings, and therefore affects both body and mind.
Swedish massage is flowing and gentle, applied with oils and is suitable as a refreshing, relaxing treatment for everybody. It is also suitable in cases of diseases like diabetes, fibromyalgia and cancer.
Deep tissue massage is slow and deep, it balances our body's structure and is important for emotional release.
Medical massage deals with different orthopedic problems, shoulders, back and neck, improves the range of movement and releases pain.
Lymphatic massage strengthen the immune system and treats edemas and swelling in the limbs.
Tamar Quinn - BSN, MA, RCP - Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
TCM is a complete medical system with a tradition going back thousands of years. It deals with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease as well as the maintenance of health.
TCM views health as a state of dynamic balance. Each human being is seen as a world in miniature, a microcosm of nature. When the elements of nature are in balance, organs function fully, the mind is clear, and challenges of daily life are met with flexibility, strength, and resilience. When that balance is upset, illness can result. The strategy of Chinese medicine is to restore harmony through the use of acupuncture, herbal medicine, diet, exercise, and massage. TCM can be used successfully as a primary treatment and also as a complementary therapy to conventional western medicine in the treatment of many acute and chronic illnesses.
Dr. Justin Resnick - PhD, Clinical Psychologist
I use a "Strength & Resiliency" model to counsel adults, teens and children. I have a PhD in clinical psychology from the USA and advanced training in marriage & family therapy, and over 12 years' experience as a psychotherapist.
"Strength & Resiliency" is a therapy approach which is uplifting and positive. We listen closely to your problems and struggles, while paying unique attention to your successes, your strengths and to what inspires you. My work incorporates methods from cognitive therapy, narrative and play therapy. I find the strengths approach particularly helpful for married couples with intense conflict, defiant teenagers, children with ADHD, abuse survivors, and anyone who has previously found therapy alienating. I work extensively and uniquely with adult men and fathers.
Odeya Emma Rosen - Psychodramatist, Shiatsu therapist
"Sometimes words just aren’t enough"
Though verbal therapy is an essential element of the therapeutic process, often we feel that it does not sufficiently help us to "get to the core of the issue." For this reason I utilize psychodrama, to activate the individual, moving from the realm of "talking about" to the realm of "being".
Through "role play" and other action methods, people or situations from your personal life can be dramatically brought into the therapy room. I will help you explore and identify the problems that may be causing difficulties in present situations and interactions. While exploring and identifying these problems through psychodrama, you will work to develop new solutions to these unresolved problems, thereby becoming empowered to make meaningful changes.
As a psychodramatist, I will encourage you to utilize your rich creative resources, in personal discovery and development. I have great faith in the individual process and see my role as aiding and accompanying your journey.
I received my B.A in Psychology from Ben-Gurion University and my M.A. in Expressive Art Therapies from Lesley University (Cambridge , Mass), specializing in Psychodrama. I treat adults, teenagers and children. In recent years I have been working with individuals and groups, children, couples and families. I am completely fluent in English and Hebrew.
I am also a Shiatsu therapist. Shiatsu is a deep touch therapy, which involves pressure and massage of different areas of the body according to a systematic diagnosis. The areas worked on are determined prior to therapy by a number of factors- the client’s physical complaints, information that the client supplies about lifestyle and habits and the therapist’s diagnosis of the "hara", the meridian map situated in the abdominal area.
Zen shiatsu is a unique form of shiatsu that considers all elements of the human being - both physical and emotional - and relates to them in a quiet, meditative, body-encompassing experience. Zen Shiatsu reduces and creates resistance to stress, enhances the blood and lymph flow within the body, strengthens the muscles and internal organs of the body, and improves one's overall physical and emotional health.
Beyond the powers of touch which in my view are at the heart of the issue, I have experienced Zen shiatsu to be a well rounded medicinal therapy, and fully enjoy practicing it. I earned my shiatsu skills from the "Maga school" of shiatsu studies. To receive shiatsu no prior experience is necessary, just the ability to receive and be touched. I give shiatsu treatment to both men and women, children and adults.
Robin Rosenbaum - Clinical Social Worker
I am from San Francisco and have been living in Jerusalem since 1993. I hold an MSW in clinical social work from San Francisco State University. I graduated in 1985 and since then I have worked as a psychotherapist in private practice and in public settings. I offer in-depth psychotherapy specializing in a variety of issues such as loss, trauma, personal transformation, and sexual orientation. I work eclectically, using a range of methods; my style is warm, personal and flexible.
I believe that the client-therapist relationship should be an open dialogue. Years of experience have shown me that therapy can heal and improve one's quality of life and relationships by bringing the past into present tense, and working through unresolved issues. It provides a reflective supportive space that allows change to happen. When people are uncomfortable and want to grow, many possibilities open up. I see myself as a facilitator in this process, a "birthing coach" (which I also happen to be).
Dr. Silvia Schneider - PhD, Clinical and Educational Psychologist
I am a licensed clinical and educational psychologist with 20 years experience working with children, adolescents, and adults, both in private practice and in the public sector. My areas of expertise include individual and couples psychotherapy, parent counseling, and psychological assessments. I work fluently in English, Hebrew, and Spanish.
I am often asked the question, "What kind of problems do you specialize in?" and my answer is that I specialize in helping a person to move forward in his life. The major obstacles people face include feeling unhappy with a particular aspect of their life, being "stuck" in life, feeling too weary/depressed/inadequate, or getting knocked down by life and not knowing how to get back up. I try to help a person overcome these difficulties and move on with life.
Orah Ursula - Narrative therapist
I have trained as a Narrative therapist in Jerusalem and through the Taos Institute in Texas.
Narrative therapy is a relatively new therapeutic approach that was developed by family therapist Michael White in the 1970s.
The presenting problem in narrative therapy is first of all externalized to create a space between client and challenge. Central to the narrative approach also is letting go of assumptions. Deconstructing discourses around a challenge liberates one from what they should be, in favor of who and what they are.
Through active reflective listening I map and navigate with the client toward a preferred re-scripted narrative.
The narrative metaphor is applicable to all presenting problems and is chosen as a preferred therapy because it speaks to the client as a methodology.
Lynne Weinstein - MSW, Psychotherapist
I focus on women in my practice, providing the client with a safe space in order to embrace her uniqueness and honor her experiences as individual, friend, caretaker, professional and intimate partner. In my practice, I often focus on women’s relationship and family issues and the depression, anxiety, anger, stress and trauma that can result from life challenges and transitions. The goal of our work together is to gain greater self-awareness and empowerment and to lead a more consciously aware life.
My approach is compassionate, highly collaborative and dialog-oriented. In my practice, I encourage women to draw on their strengths and resilience. We work together on trusting their own innate wisdom and utilizing their resources to achieve their goals and reach their potential. I utilize psychodynamic/cognitive therapies and neuro-linguistic programming as well as feminist theory in order to provide insight and tools that encourage healing and growth.
I work on a sliding fee scale depending on the client’s financial capacity.
Netta Yitzhar - certified senior shiatsu therapist
For many years, I have been working with a variety of people dealing with a range of mind-body problems. I have assisted in Shiatsu study groups and have given workshops in all different settings of Shiatsu, movement and Judaism.
Through relaxing and strengthening the body, Shiatsu creates a mind-body balance. Shiatsu treats both physical and mental difficulties, helps induce relaxation and higher quality of life, and helps problems such as insomnia, mental and physical tension, PMS, menstrual problems including regularity of the period and fertility, body stiffness, stomachaches, headaches and more.
The actual tipul integrates a full body aromatic-oil massage, nutrition guidance following the principles of Chinese medicine, Chinese medicinal herbs and dietary supplements, and the use of moxa.
I believe that holistic treatment enables one to not only have a healthier and more balanced life, but a higher quality of life. During the treatment the client receives personal guidance suitable for her needs, qualities and abilities, so that even after the ending of the treatment, the client will have tools for continuing to live a healthy balanced body-mind life style on her own.
Aviva Zahavi- Asa - M.S.W., L.C.S.W., Individual, Couples and Family Therapy
Each individual, couple and family has its own unique way of looking at the world and its own special way of coping with life’s challenges. When our customary ways of approaching these challenges no longer work for us, therapy can help fuel our creativity and can help us discover new possibilities for how to go about living our lives. These possibilities expand our understanding of our current difficulties; explore how the present is connected to the past; and allow us to tell different stories about ourselves and about the significant people in our lives.
With close to 20 years of clinical experience in both California and Israel , I have been privileged to assist at-risk children and adolescents, adults of all ages, couples and families learn to navigate their lives in new directions. My areas of specialty include working with adolescents and adults who are currently experiencing - or in the past have experienced - emotional, physical or sexual abuse; those who are struggling with learning disabilities or ADHD (including spouses and parents of these individuals); and individuals, couples and families who have made aliya and are coping with the multitude of changes brought about by immigration. I have a Masters degree in Social Work; I received a clinical license from the State of California to practice psychotherapy; and I completed post-Masters training in marriage and family therapy at the Family Institute in Jerusalem . I maintain a private practice in both Jerusalem and Efrat.
I work in both Hebrew and English.
